Real Life Stumble Upon

June 14, 2011

Yesterday morning my roommate and I decided to take an impromptu day trip to explore a small town a little ways away. We thought we would try to create a real life version of Stumble Upon by not having any itinerary and just seeing where the wind blew us. I’ll be the first to admit that I can get sucked in to Stumble Upon for hours at a time. Every site seeming better than the last, until you suddenly realize it’s been 4 hours since you’ve moved any muscle in your body. Quite addicting if you ask me. But nothing beats the spontaneity of stumbling upon real-life fascinations, so that’s just what we set out to do.

We found the cutest antique shop right away, busting with unique jewelry, vintage cookware and plenty of chatchkis. Thrifting is easily one of my favorite past-times; finding a good gem is so thrilling!

Next we stopped at the Cabot Cheese factory, a chocolate store, and a cider mill for free samples and some browsing. Nothing like 18 samples of wasabi and buffalo cheese to really take a day trip up a notch.

After enjoying our packed lunches and the gorgeous panoramic views of the greenest mountains we’d ever seen, we found ourselves driving up a winded road towards the Von Trapp family lodge. The lodge is set up the side of a mountain and is woven with endless hiking and walking trails. We went for a stroll into some of the damp paths that were laced with patches of sunlight and plenty of flowers.

A final stop was made for some coffee and treats as we headed back home. All in all, a day that was much more spontaneous than simply clicking a button to bring you to the next fascinating thing. I think I’ll be trading in some of those endless hours at the computer screen for some more real- life adventures.

Do enjoy trips with or without itineraries? When it’s a full blown vacation I love having just a few “to-do’s” but mostly just time to relax and unwind. And I love spontaneous day trips too!

As soon as you said “von trapp” I realized you must be in VT! My best friend just moved from Bolton Valley to Burlington, such an awesome place! So many little towns to “stumble upon”
