Birthdays Past and Birthday Present

June 25, 2011

Last year, about a week after my birthday came and went, my friends, whom I was living with on Block Island, threw me an unbelievable surprise 20th birthday party. I only had the slightest hint that something was up, but that did not ruin an ounce of the excitement or magic of the night. Here are only some of the memories captured in photos…

Β Β

{String lights and lanterns scattered in the trees}

{The makings for gin and tonics and plenty of vino}

{stolen hydrangeas, perfect for decorating}

{plenty of all our favorite foods}

{a beautiful summery cake made by a friend}

{finding ladybugs on my cake, never a bad thing}

{friends to enjoy the evening with}

{plenty of dancing and shenanigans}

It was magic. I have no other way to describe it. One of the best nights of my life, and easily the best birthday I have ever had.

.

As my 21st birthday quickly approaches, it’s sinking in that I won’t be out on the island to celebrate one more year of my life. I turned 18, 19 and 20 out there. We partied at bonfires until we couldn’t keep our eyes open, we dined in the nicest restaurants overlooking miles of beaches, and we celebrated not only my birthday but the beginning of yet another summer spent among the unbelievable beauty of that island.

.

So here I am, undeniably excited to celebrate this next huge milestone, yet a piece of me wishing I was spending it where I celebrated the last 3.

.

This year we have plans of barbecuing down by the lakefront park, and trying out lots of bars around town. There won’t be string lanterns, buckets of hydrangeas, or outdoor dancing under the trees until the morning hours. But with friends to enjoy the evening, plenty of gin and tonics, and hopefully a ladybug or two I think this birthday should turn out just fine.

.

How did you celebrate your last birthday or big milestone? I prefer barbecuing or making dinner in with a bunch of friends compared to dining out.

    I celebrated turning 30 last year on the AT by eating pizza! It was a rare day of coming into a town so we stopped at a small store for food in West Hartford, VT. This year as I delve really into my 30s I guess I’ll find something a little more delicious than grocery store pizza!

      That’s awesome that you celebrated while hiking. I’m off for a small hike today with friends and our new dog. Snake Mt. in Addison, VT, not huge but great views. Do you have a favorite mountain in VT that you recommend? Nothing wrong with a good slice of pizza!

    This is awesome! I totally understand the nostalgic feelings as you get older. I keep finding that every month passes leaves me a little sadder and missing the early college days more and more. But there’s so much to look forward too as well, so it all balances out. Anyways, all you really need for a great birthday is to be surround by really great friends, and an un-ordinary amount of laughter, right?! πŸ˜‰ I’m sure your 21st birthday will be unforgettable.. can’t wait to hear about it!

    I love Block Island! I just got back from a road trip visiting my friend there. It’s so relaxing and definitely one of my favorite bike riding spots. We had a great disco night at Captain Nick’s. Your birthday pics are beautiful. I always wish that I could have an outdoor birthday party, but since mine falls in February I have to get creative. Last year my friends and I celebrated my 29th at a Japanese karaoke bar. So much fun!

      Ohhh I’m so jealous you were just out there! Yes biking is amazing on the island, although very hilly! I never went to Nick’s because I was too young, but I did go to Kittens a couple of times! Karaoke is so so much fun, I bet that was a great birthday! And thanks for the picture compliments πŸ™‚

    Hi Katie! Your birthday last year sounds truly magical. The pictures are breathtaking and look like something out of a movie. Jealous!

    I usually celebrate by doing a fun activity or dinner with friends, and then barbecue and pool party with family. It’s great having a summer birthday, but typically my friends are scattered everywhere so it makes it kind of rough!

      Thanks for the picture compliment:) The night was so memorable, and I’m happy I had just purchased my nice camera the month before so I was really able to capture it. And yes, summer birthdays are the best! I’m too far from my family to go home for my birthday unfortunately so I’ll just be making up for it with extra friend celebrations hopefully!
