The Forbidden Fruit and My First DIY
So apparently there are poisonous nuts inside of peach pits. You would think this would be more widespread knowledge considering how popular peaches are and how poisonous poison is…
See that little seemingly harmless nut? After a quick google search I came to find out that very same seemingly harmless nut that was now in my stomach contained cyanide. Great.
Apparently they are called bitter almonds… you’d think something containing cyanide wouldn’t have such an average name.
But I’m fine. You need to ingest like a hundred to die. So I’ll stop cracking to the center of peach pits out of curiosity… and I guess I’ll stop eating unknown substances before a quick google search.
In other news I attempted one of my first DIY projects; a bed canopy.
Growing up I would have given my Barbie mobile for a bed canopy. Now, being all grown up, I can make these things I once wanted so dearly.
5 yards of fabric, some flower wire, string, lots of paper clips– yeah it’s not too sturdy.
And the new Bon Iver album that I’ve been gushing over for days to listen to.
It needs some tweaking, but I love feeling cocooned. I think my next project will be to make some pillows for my cocoon.
.
What’s the latest DIY project you’ve done? Would you have eaten the almond?
That’s so strange! I didn’t know that the pits contained another nut!
By the way, those elephant sheets are incredibly awesome! Do you mind my asking where you got them??
Thanks! I got them from The Company Store but I’ve searched for a friend recently and they don’t seem to sell them anymore. They have some other awesome bedding though.
Awesome! Thank you so much!
I ALWAYS wanted a canopy bed! Oh my goodness! I am so jealous. Where did you find the DIY directions??? Do share!
I searched all over for some tips or tutorials and I couldn’t find anything, so I just went with how I thought it might work. I would share but it’s not the most stable set-up, and I’m going to be on the look out for something a little more structured to help it hang better. When I find that, maybe I’ll do a step- by- step.
I probably would have been too suspicious to eat the almond. But I don’t know, maybe I wouldn’t have been, considering it looks just like a normal almond! I loved canopies when I was younger. I was so excited when my mom bought me one for my bed! Nothing says princess like a canopy.
I have never cracked a peach pit open but that is interesting to know!
Yikes, that’s a scary thought for you. I wonder if apple seeds are okay? Sometimes I’m so hungry (apples are my emergency can’t-wait-till-lunch/dinner snack) that I eat them in like.. two bites, seeds and all.
Fun canopy!! Good for you for tackling that on your own. My boyfriend and I just replaced my kitchen faucet ourselves and boy did we feel like pro DIY-ers 😉 good luck with your pillow project! xx
THAT IS SO CUTE.
the canopy, not the almond.
although, I probably would have eaten it.
Glad to know someone else would have too haha! My roommates think I’m crazy for eating something that I didn’t know what it was… but I like to live life on the edge I suppose 😉
Apple seeds are poisonous, too. Same stuff.
And the peach pit looks EXACTLY like an almond-so mysterious….and dangerous!
ahaha, when i first read that they were poisonous i had a momentary “wow, glad i didn’t eat it that one time…” moment. no joke – i accidentally split open a peach pit once, saw the almondy thing, thought “hey! it looks like an almond! what’s it taste like?” moment…tried it…couldn’t bite it…and finally threw it out.
so i was glad to read i’m not the only one who had a similar thought, haha.
your bed canopy looks awesome! and i used to be obsessed with bob iver’s song, “skinny love.” except that was the only one i really got to know, i admit :X
(p.s. – thank you so much for the ski rack recommendation. that sounds like a way better bet than NB. i’ll have to take a field trip sometime in the next couple weeks.)
That is one of my favorites of his songs as well. And my almond was actually really easy to bite into… interesting!
DIY project? buying a car yesterday without anyone to help me 🙂
and no, that pit/almond would have been too bitter i think for me to try 🙂
Haha yes quite literally DIY. It was a little bitter, but more of an almond extracty kind of taste. In fact dare I say I sort of liked it…
glad you made that canopy! loved mine last year, used safety pins and thumbtacks and it miraculously stayed up for a whole semester
Lize I didn’t know you had one, that’s awesome! glad I’m not the only one who makes things in such a rustic fashion.
i loveeee bon iver!!! back in 2008 i went to see him the night before my birthday and celebrated the beginning of my birthday while standing in the front row listening to them (justin vernon i love bearded mennnnnn) play for emma forever ago. to say it was an awesome birthday is an understatement.
Ahhh I’m insanely jealous. I’ve been trying to see them for years but its never worked out. The new album is fantastic, I’m sure you’ll love it!
